Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Initiatives

Athens, Greece – 22 December 2021 – Today, with challenges and opportunities for young people being more than ever before, MYTILINEOS continues to stand by their side and help them make their dreams come true. Therefore, for the third consecutive year, the Company continues its cooperation with “The Tipping Point” organization, implementing the experiential educational program of the same name that brings together students with their own professional role models.

In particular, students from 40 Greek schools, but also for the first-time from foreign schools, learn more about the studies or the profession they want to follow, in order to be properly prepared of the important academic and professional decisions they will be called upon to take. This collaboration also helps in the psychological reinforcement and empowerment of students.

The program is based on innovative methods, as with the aid of technology, live sessions (live mentoring) are held involving successful professionals and academic mentors. Under the current restrictions due to the pandemic, distance communication brings together students and their mentors successfully, regardless of geographical area, economic and social standing to get answers to questions regarding their future.

During the past two school years (2019-2021) MYTILINEOS through the "The Tipping Point" gave the opportunity to 4.004 students from 45 schools from all over Greece to discover their interests and to establish a connection with the labor market for the first time in their lives. Specifically, 340 live sessions were conducted, where 255 professionals and academics as mentors contributed voluntarily and shared knowledge and experiences, informing and empowering students.

For example, some of the mentors' specialties that the schools supported by MYTILINEOS have been linked to during the previous two school years were the following:

  • Post-doctoral researcher at Harvard University (she was awarded a prize for her research on metabolism and cancer from the American Heart Association)
  • Head of the Foreign Policy sector in the European Parliament's Research Service and Research associate of Chatham House Institute
  • Engineer at CERN
  • Paralympic champion in Swimming and Physiatrist
  • Rector Emeritus at the School of Journalism, University of Columbia, New York
  • Astrophysicist at the University of Cologne
  • Surgeon with active voluntary action in third world countries

By supporting the program, MYTILINEOS helps to create up-to-date and conscientious young people regarding their academic choices and their future career in decent jobs. This initiative is of particular value to the Company and is implemented in the framework of strategic partnerships developed with key social actors to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (Goals 4 and 17), while helping the country uphold its future successful professionals, eliminating the “brain drain” effect.
