Waste quantities from the Group's

The total quantity of waste from the activities of MYTILINEOS Group in
2014 was 807,115 tons, down by 12.6% from 2013. Of this total quantity,
98.3% is generated by the Metallurgy & Mining Sector and only 1.7% by
the Group's other activity sectors. In terms of waste category, hazardous
waste products were reduced by 5% and non-hazardous ones by 13%.
Disposal in controlled landfills refers to all hazardous waste and
aggregates and to all non-hazardous waste that were disposed of in
Controlled Landfills for Hazardous Waste and Non-Hazardous Waste,
respectively, by the Metallurgy & Mining Sector. The bauxite mining
process and the production of aluminium generate the main volume
of waste. In order to manage efficiently this waste, MYTILINEOS Group
has carried out substantial investments over the last years, focusing on
effective ways for the disposal of this waste on land, in a Group-owned
area and in accordance with the terms of a relevant environmental
license, as well as on methods for their utilisation, by converting them
into marketable products for sale. The improvement in this particular
area will largely depend on the utilisation of this waste which, until
final disposal, is accumulated of in a special
area which, for the purposes of measuring
the Group's environmental footprint, is
considered as a Controlled Landfill for
Non-Hazardous Waste.

In addition, waste specific to the
Metallurgy & Mining Sector also
includes waste from the mining process,
which refers to: (a) Waste from underground
quarries (rocks and stones) which presents no risk, as it is used to
fill hollows in ore deposits under exploitation; and (b) quantities of
mud which come from the management of residue obtained from the
natural separation of the wastewater from washing of machinery and
mining site workshop ramps, are packaged in metal barrels and are
dispatched to Germany for incineration through ENVIROCHEM S.A.
The quantity given in the recycling, recovery and reuse category involves
mainly industrial waste as well as various types of materials collected,
which include metal scrap (e.g. iron and steel), vehicle batteries,
used lubricants, electrical and electronic equipment, paper, carton,
wooden pallets, home batteries and toner cartridges from printers and
photocopiers (803 pieces of ink cartridges and toners).

The Group's approach to responsible waste management
* This percentage refers to waste other than bauxite residues.
MYTILINEOS Group has invested
more than €12 million over the last five years
in the Metallurgy & Mining Sector for the
installation of four (4) Filter Presses, which made
a decisive contribution, initially to the effective disposal
of bauxite residues on land and, later on, to the possibility
of applying special methods for their treatment in order
to convert them to usable products. Furthermore,
during 2014 the 4th and 5th cells of the Controlled Landfill
for Hazardous Waste of ALUMINIUM OF GREECE
were restored, in accordance with the approved
environmental terms. In parallel, the Landfill's 6th
cell entered into operation, and the studies for
construction of the 7th cell were launched.
Waste recycling, reuse and utilisation is followed
in all MYTILINEOS Group subsidiaries, by means
of specialised procedures applied in the stages
of production, management, collection, treatment/recovery
and disposal of the respective waste streams. Where feasible,
the materials to be recycled are utilised inside the facilities
of the Group's subsidiaries, while where waste cannot
be recycled internally, this is done trough collective waste
management systems or licensed waste contractors.
Through its subsidiary
ALUMINIUM OF GREECE, MYTILINEOS Group
participates in European research projects
on cost-efficient "green" technologies in the aluminium
industry, in collaboration with educational and research
institutions. The Group intends to expand its participation
to other research projects active in the utilisation of bauxite
residues, such as "
EURARE
" and "
MC-ITNREDMUD
".
In addition, ALUMINIUM OF GREECE submitted to the EU,
in collaboration with the National Technical University
of Athens, a joint proposal concerning a programme
for a pilot installation for the utilisation of bauxite
residues, as a continuation of the
"
ENEXAL
" EU programme.
