8. ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION
The respect for the environment has
been a core value of MYTILINEOS
Group since its very establishment. Our
Group seeks to mitigate the impact of
its activities on the environment, by fol-
lowing closely the developments in en-
vironmental technologies and practices
and by applying the best available tech-
niques. The environmental protection
and industrial hazard control policies
that we have in place form the basis of
a comprehensive and effective system
of Environmental Management rules,
which we aim to gradually integrate in-
to our business activities and into the
procedures that define the daily op-
eration of all Group companies. In this
context, during 2012 we completed
the implementation of the ISO 14001
International Standard procedures in
our subsidiary PROTERGIA S.A., which
subsequently obtained the respective
certification.
This development marked the suc-
cessful attainment of our goal, which
was to ensure that all our business
units have in place ISO 14001-certified
Environmental Management Systems.
Additionally, to further enhance our en-
vironmental performance, we are fo-
cusing on knowledge acquisition, net-
working and collaboration with envi-
ronmental organisations in order to de-
velop new policies and adapt existing
systems, such as for example to de-
velop a system for measuring green-
house gas emissions at the Group
level. We are also continuing with our
efforts to foster a uniform environ-
mental conscience cross all our sub-
sidiaries, through relevant education
and training activities.
In line with the above, in 2012 we in-
troduced and applied a specific pro-
cedure to determine the key environ-
mental issues which are of concern to
us, with the participation of the CSR
teams of all our subsidiaries. The results
of this exercise, shown in the table be-
low and accompanied by clarifications
and references to the corresponding
actions, represent our Group’s Envi-
ronmental Footprint, published here for
the first time. This procedure will be ap-
plied annually and its results will be pre-
sented in a dedicated section of our
Sustainability Report, so that any
changes or deviations – positive or neg-
ative– in our environmental perform-
ance are immediately visible to our
Stakeholders.
