Metallurgy and Mining

For MYTILINEOS Group, the growth and competitiveness of its metallurgy branch is a key strategic priority. Starting with the acquisition of “ALUMINIUM OF GREECE” in 2005, which marked a major turning point in its evolution, the Group has been established as one of the sector’s strongest players in SE Europe.

The Group’s strategy in the Metallurgy & Mining sector focuses on the following:

  • Providing optimal products and solutions to its clients, beyond the mere supply of commodities.
  • Seeking new projects geared towards vertical integration or expansion, to strengthen its business in the sector.
  • Increasing its competitiveness through strategic investments and the risk-hedging methods.

In line with this strategy, the total energy, industrial and environmental investments carried out by MYTILINEOS Group in Agios Nikolaos, Viotia, where the industrial complex of ALUMINIUM ALUMINIUM OF GREECE is located, were among the largest private-sector investments ever to be carried out in Greece.

As a result, ALUMINIUM OF GREECE, is today the largest vertically integrated aluminium production and trading plant in the EU and, together with DELPHI-DISTOMON S.A., are driving the growth of the national economy and the country’s periphery.

From 1960 to this day, ALUMINIUM OF GREECE remains one of the strongest pillars of Greek industry, with an annual production capacity that exceeds 182,000 tons of aluminium and 820,000 tons of alumina.

It was established in 1960 by Pechiney, the French metallurgy giant of that time, in order to exploit the rich bauxite deposits of Central Greece for producing alumina and aluminium.

In 2005, ALUMINIUM OF GREECE became a member of the MYTILINEOS Group and has since evolved into the largest vertically integrated alumina and aluminium production and trading plant in the European Union.

The company’s industrial complex in Ag. Nikolaos, Viotia, employs 1,100 people directly and more than 400 indirectly, and applies production and trading practices on a par with those of the world’s top metallurgical industries.

From its establishment to this day, the Company has been a catalyst for local growth and is proud to support – and be supported by – generations of employees who are the driving force of an industry that is developing pioneering know-how at the global level.

With equal resolve, ALUMINIUM OF GREECE is working to improve its social and environmental footprint, guided by the values of Corporate Social Responsibility and aiming to produce long-term benefits for society.
